Forum submit buttons don't work

J

James Martens

Whenever I try to submit a forum (e.g. google search, msn search) the
browser ignores me. It doesn't matter if I press 'enter' within the
search box or click the button, it simply does nothing.

I've done several sweeps for spyware. Hijackthis finds nothing,
several other spyware programs found (and apparently cleaned) traces
of CoolWWWSearch but I'm pretty sure I got rid of that crap a long
time ago (well before I started noticing this error).

I've run sfc /scannow to verify that the IE files are intact. I've
cleared my history, temp files, autocomplete records, reset all the
settings to their defaults and have tried (without success) to get the
darn program to reinstall itself.

None of my efforts have achieved any results.

I'm running IE version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A lot of buttons on web pages require JavaScript. Are you running any
software to block pop ups or to allegedly improve security by blocking
"Scripting"?

It might have something vaguely to do with Javascript but I'm not
sure.

I visit plenty of sites that are Javascript super-intensive like Gmail
and they work fine. Yet, I'm still plagued with Javascript errors on
many websites I go to that definately shouldn't have any errors such
as comedycentral.com's main page. For example if I try to use the
search feature on comedy central's page I get an error to do with
submiting the forum, specifically : "No such interface supported" for
"javascript:submitSearch();". Also on the website www.fat-pie.com I
get plenty of errors that I dont think anyone else gets.

I've cranked down the security settings, turned off toolbars and
extensions, deactived the pop-up blocker and nothing helps. It's like
the component of my IE that handles all forum and javascript related
tasks is fundementally broken but IE won't let me reinstall any of it
since IE is a precious system component and not real software.

Well IE can be a bit picky, under tools>internet options>advanced there are
a couple of check boxes to Disable script debugging and also one to Enable
script errors, you might look at those and reset them to see if it helps,
but I don't think that's going to cure the submit problem.

I guess you could try downloading the scripting host again to see if that
has anything to do with the problem, that's here,
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-7E4B-4622-86EB-95A22B832CAA&displaylang=en
(Assuming XP), but you might also wait and see what others think

Tried reinstalling the scripting host a long time ago, didn't work =\

My best guess right now is that some anti-spyware or anti-virus program
(possibly norton) has left some lingering script blocker or filter on
my system (after being uninstalled) and thanks to Windows having the
Worst Design in the Universe (by which I of course mean the registry)
it is nearly impossible for me to track down where my scripting is
being intercepted and fix it.

I've ran into another problem recently that is equally frustrating: I
can't play WMVs anymore. Happened while I was swapping sound cards and
updating my video drivers. I've used codec sniping programs to look at
all the codecs and filters installed on my machine, I've run DirectShow
diagnostics, I've tried reinstalling the WMV codecs and windows media
player itself dozens of times, and nothing works. The error message is
"Unknown error" and when I click "More information" the player crashes.
Using another player like Media Player Classic sucks since thanks to
MS patents noone is allowed to make a decent WMV decoder except for MS.
Again I'm sure some little hidden piece of crap in my registry is
screwing it up, but since the registry is 10,000 pages of
uninterpretable giberish I have no where to start.

I'm sure the official MS solution in my case is to reinstall the
operating system. Because it should be nessesary to reinstall an
operating system to fix obscure codec glitches.... riiiiggghhhttt....
