formula not calculating

recieved a message stating that an error occurred and some
formula's in excel will not work. on inspection none of
the formula from previous files are working and new files
are inially calculating but not updating any changes?
Why? whats happened?

Check in
Tools > Options > Calculation tab
that calculation is set to automatic.

This is a 'session' setting, and will take whichever (auto/manual) is set on
the first workbook opened in each session (i.e. each time Excel is run),
unless it is changed as above. Throughout that session, this setting applies
to all workbooks. So, if you first open a workbook with it set to manual,
any workbook subsequently opened will become manual. When you save, this
setting is saved, so you can see how manual setting easily gets propagated
if you are not very careful.
