Formatting SD cards

I have a new digital frame and am attempting to load pictures from my XP SP2
computer to two different SD cards (SANDISK 512 mb, ATIVA 2 GB) using a
Digital Concepts reader/writer. I continously get a message that the disk
needs to be formatted, when I click okay I then get a message that windows
cannot complete the format. I have tried on my Vista laptop with same result.
I have talked to two people who have now started having problems reading SD
cards with windows. Was there an update that could be causing this problem?
Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried formatting the SD card in your camera? Of course you are
aware that formatting deletes any information that was there.
