Formatting questions

I have 2 questions that didn't seem to fit in any of the specific forums, my
apologies if they're in the wrong place:

1. It used to be that if I highlighted a chunk of text and simply started
typing, the highlighted chunk of text would disappear in favor of my new
typing. As well, if I highlight a chunk of text and hit backspace, the text
would delete.

All of a sudden typing or hitting backspace on a chunk of highlighted text,
simply moves the cursor to the beginning of the highlighted text, leaving it
intact. How do I change this so that the highlighted text disappears or is
replaced by the nex text?

2. You know how you may have a numbered list(or any type of list, really)
and you want a long, tall bracket to encompass the entire list? Something
like this:

_
| 1.xxxxxxx
| 2. xxxxxxxx
| 3. xxxxxxx
xxxx --| 4. xxxxx
| 5. xxxxx
| 6. xxxx
|_

Not a very good diagram I know. Essentially I want one of these '{' but
spanning several lines. How do you do this in Word?

Thanks for your help

1. In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK.

2. Display the Drawing toolbar if it isn't already displayed
(View | Toolbars | Drawing). On the Drawing toolbar, click on
AutoShapes | Basic Shapes. Click on one of the bracket shapes.
In your Word document, drag your mouse over the area where you
want the bracket to appear.

Further to #2, put the text on the left side of the bracket in
one text box, and put the text on the right side of the bracket
in another text box, and then drag the text boxes to visually
appealing positions relative to the bracket.
