Formatting Paragraphs

My copy of Word seems to have started behaving oddly recently. If I have a
document containing several paragraphs and I wish to change the formatting of
just one of them, my understanding is that I select it and reformat it (for
exanple bold it or centre it or change the typeface or something). But
recently I have found that when I do that, the whole document is reformatted,
not just the desired para. Can someone tell me what is wrong, please?
 
Thank you. It worked like a dream. Can't understand how "automatically
update" came to be set, however.
