Formatting of Footnote numbers

I am using Word 2002. When inserting a footnote, the
footnote number in the document is at normal text size. A
footnote number should at least be in superscript. The
only way I can see to get the footnote number into
superscript is to highlight each number, then go to
format, font and select superscript. this seems like a
waste of time.

Is there some way to set the overall options for footnote
numbering to "superscript", so when the number is
inserted, it is correct?
 
Change the Footnote Reference style to superscript:

Format | Styles and Formatting | Show: Custom... | Footnote Reference |
Modify | Format | Font | Superscript | OK | Add to Template | OK.
