formatting new hard drive probs plz help!

Hi,

I have Windows XP. I have 2 hard drives, the first is IBM 60GB IDE and the
second is a Maxtor 80GB SATA drive connected via a Silicon Image 3112 SATA
Controller.

I have installed a new Maxtor 200GB SATA drive which is connected to the
SATA controller card and it is detected by windows in start up and in windows
explorer.

However, it says I need to format the hard drive which I do by right
clicking on My Computer > Manage > Disk Management

All goes good except when it gets to around the 91% mark. When it gets to
about here the system just freezes and when i reset the system, it still says
i need to format the new drive in order to actually use it.

I have tried closing all other programs etc and then formatting the drive
but it hangs everytime i try it.

I have searched the net for hours for some clues on what it could be but I
could not find anything. Can someone please help??

Sanj,
I'm no expert, but I have installed many hard drives. My first reaction
is that your 80 GB hard drive may be defective. Try running scandisk on it
to see if that will repair any defects.
