How do I format negative numbers to display in brackets/braces ( ) in Excel
rather than with a minus sign?

You can format the Numbers in 'Number Format'.
Simply go to Format | Cells, and choose Number. Pick the negative format
option of your choice.

I appreciate your input, however I'm not able to see an option for
brackets/braces, only four instances of 1234.10 in black and red font and
preceded by the minus sign (eg: -1234.10). Any ideas on how I can gain
access to extra options?

There are four choices:
One with a -
One in Red
When in Parentheses
One Red and in Parentheses

Just pick the one in parentheses.
If you want Square Bracket, then use the following number format:
0.00_);"["0.00"]"
Adjust the number of decimal places as needed.

Unfortunately none of my options appear in parentheses and I'm not sure why
not. I'm using Excel 2002. I do recall in a previous version of Excel that
there were more options available. I'll keep looking!

If not available in Format>Cells>Number.....

This is a function of your Regional Settings in Windows OS.

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Regional and Language Settings>Regional
Options>Customize>Currency>Negative Currency Format. Click on drop-down arrow
and select the ($1.1)

Apply and OK>Apply your way out.

You will have to close Excel then re-open to see effects.

hi
the way to do that is :
choose the cells and then fromat/cells, in numbar tab choose custom and
enter "0_ ;(0 )" in the type box, click ok.
you can use other characters instead of paranteses such as brakets or ...
for example: 0_;[0]

I'm sorry guys but I have tried all these options as well as restarting Excel
and the options for negatives in brackets are still not achievable. It
surprises me really that this is not the defualt.

Re-read my post.

The change in Regional Options is done under "Currency" not "Number".

I've done both suggestions and no success. I am in Australia region. Also how
do I make certain customisations to automically apply to all worksheets I
open by default

When all else fails, there is the somewhat nasty option of defining
CUSTOM entry of
"$ "#,##0.00;[Red]-"($ "#,##0.00" )"
which should produce your required resul
