I was given a PC with a 40 Gig HD in it that has Windows
2000 Pro installed on it. The old user had a password
installed and I have no way of aquiring it since the old
owner passed away. I also do not have any of the old
discs! I am just simply trying to remove 2000 by
formatting the HD and I am having no luck. I am trying
to use the Win 98 boot disk I have and format, but it
says "Does Not Support Format Command" I also have no
luck when entering FDISK and trying to partition the HD.
It just freezes up . Any ideas would be greatly
appreciated ! Thanks and feel free to e-mail me with any
solutions

There are lots of ways of formatting a hard disk. Here
are two of them:

- Boot with your Win2000 CD, pretend to install Win2000,
then allow the disk to be formatted when prompted.

- Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk from
www.bootdisk.com, then use fdisk.exe to repartition
the disk. You can then format each partition.

Alternatively, instead of reinstalling, you could download the password
reset disk available from:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html

A handy tool to have around, especially for when staff leave and reset
passwords on machines, etc.
