Install Win 2000 on external hard drive

I need to install Win 2000 on an external Maxtor usb/firewire hard
drive so that I can boot from either WinXP on the internal HD or from
this external HD with Win 2000. The bios of the Dell Optiplex GX620
allows for boot from usb CD drive. The Win 2000 system needs to be able
to see a SCSI card on the motherboard.

Any ideas whether or not this is possible?

NT based O/Ses can't be run from an external USB or Firewire drive.
Just can't be done.
