Formatting a DVD-R disc with My Computer format disc utility

Has anyone else tried formatting a DVD_R (non recordable) disc using the
format disc utility? I tried it and it works!! I got the standard window
format on the disc and can record files to, delete files, and open and record
new files. After reading all the problems that dvd-r drives can come up
with, I'm afraid it will crash something if I use this. Anyone else have
information? Thank if you do.

This is misplaced and doesn't belong here. Why?

1. WinXP does not have ANY capability to support DVDs. None. Zero.

2. What optical media XP does support, CDR and CDRW, can't be
"formatted" by WinXP. To do that, you MUST use a third-party program.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I don't know where else to post.
There are other DVD questions here. Now I'm worried! I am running xphome,
My dvd-rom drive is a HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8163B and I'm using Maxell DVD-R
discs. I am not very computer savvy, but a program I had on my old computer
did format DVD-R disc in the windows fomat. At that time I was running ME
OS. It worked so well that I thought I would just try formatting a disc
using the windows format disc utility, and chose my e-drive to format instead
of the a-drive. And really it worked as a windows folder instead of a dvd
disc. I am still using it, but now that you have said it can't be done I'm
really nervous about crashing something. Have you tried this? Or am I
losing it?

There are plenty of groups for DVD information - they even have the
letters DVD in their title. Search them out and ask their.
