Have the XP install disk? It's bootable, and will do what you want.

Hi Doug

Why do you need to reformat - that is the last option you need to consider? If you have any problems with XP, please post them here and we will try and sort them out for you.

HP should have provided you with some sort of recovery
disk.

Thank you very much. The boot disk that was supplied i

cannot find, so a friend of mine tried his disk and was
told that HP did not support his disk. We tried a few
other to no avail. I am try to reformat due to viruses and
to have a fresh computer. If any one knows where i can get
disks or disk to boot my HP computer that would be very
helpful. P.S. would i be able to use a win 95 boot disk
then just upgrade to XP. P.S.S. i am or was using win xp
professional.

You format the disk as a part of a fresh setup of the system. For a
retail system, You do it as part of a reinstall of the system after
booting the XP CD direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement
take New Install. When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select
and delete the current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted
at the next stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one

With an HP, and no CD, you would use their method of initiating a
restore to ex-factory state, which now means hitting a specific key as
you power on (IIRC it is F10, but consult the manual)
