hi.
i'm writing a lengthy booklet with chapters/headings in ms word. obviously
all chapter headings start at the top of a page but when amend an earlier
chapter all subsequent chapter headings move up or down depending on if i add
or remove text. this might sound a silly question but how can i stop
amedments to one chapter affecting a later one?

What do you mean by "move up or down"?

The simplest way to be sure each chapter starts on a new page is to
format the Style for chapter headings (probably Heading 1?) with "Page
break before," which you'll find on the second tab of the Format
Paragraph pane.
