formating external HDD

During a NTFS partition/format of a new 230GB external HDD and a 120GB
external HDD, I received the following error message: "The operation did not
complete because the partition or volume is not enabled. To enable the
partition or volume restart the computer." After restarting, the external
drive was visible as a healthy active drive in Disk Manage but not in My
Computer. It did not show up as a NTFS drive in Disk Manage. When I would
right click the drive in Disk Manage to Explore it would tell me "Not
accesible".

This operation was done on my home computer. On my office computer the
partition/format on bother disks worked fine and I was even able to move
files on to the disks.

This leads me to believe that there is problem on my computer. Any ideas?

Go back to the Disk Manager, then partition and format the
external disk.

Appreciate your response. I have partitioned and formatted the disks many
times and always get the same error message "The operation did not complete
because the partition or volume is not enabled. To enable the partition or
volume restart the computer."

I restart the computer and partition and format and again get the same error
message.

Any ideas?

Hi Eli,

What are you using to partition the drive?

When I use CompMgmt.msc, I always make sure to reboot then drop to a
command prompt if I want the partition to be FAT32 or I use the
format in freeCommander if want NTFS.

Hi C. Joseph,
I am trying to format and partition a 230GB external hdd NTFS using Disk
Manage in Win XP Pro. The problem is possibly only on my computer as I was
succesful in formatting/partioning on other computers. If you have another
solution to formatting/partioning NTFS I would like to hear the details.
Thanks very much.
