Hi people.
I am running windws XP on an Emachines PC and having problems, so ive tried
to format it by putting in the disk, although it keeps coming up with the
message

"cannot open r:/220.gho"
followed by "output a:/ghosterr.txt"

i've heard that this is something to do with symantec but their website is
not too helpful,
Does anyone know how i can overcome this problem?
thanks,

HI Craig,
Did you before trying to install (I'm assuming you doing Clean install) to
Uninstall the Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware from your computer as they can
hinder your installtion process or you try to install on gohsted machine with
symantec Gosht image.
And in what stage the message appear.

Please clarify these thing we may can help.
HTH

nass

It isn't a Symantec problem, emachines created a hidden virtual partition where
your backup/restore image is tucked away. The restore disks IIRC contain Ghost to
access the partition and restore the OS, driver and software files.

Are you inserting the proper disk first?
Place the first disk in the drive and shutdown.
Wait approx 20 sec. and start the machine.
If your 100% sure you want to reset the machine to the factory state, when prompted
Press 1 to continue. You will loose everything you haven't saved.

Perhaps if you haven't already, you could mention what the problems are that you
are having and possibly get it resolved without any drastic measures such as
restoring the machine to it's factory state.

My bad, disregard the hidden partition chatter. The ghosterr.txt is a standard
read/write error when it either can't read the disk or write to the hard drive. When
you get the error press the spacebar to see which type it is. If it's a read error,
make sure the disk is clean and the CD/DVD drive is functioning properly. If it's a
write error, unplug/remove all devices except the keyboard, mouse and monitor.

Boot up with CD1 in the drive and when prompted select option 1 to restore.
If no joy reboot with the disk still in and select option 2 to boot to a DOS prompt.

At the prompt type: ghost.exe and press Enter, Ghost should now start.
You will have to navigate using the Tab key and the up/down/right/left arrow keys
since the mouse will not work.
Tab to move from button to button
Arrow keys to move in menus
Enter to select an item in a list
Enter to activate buttons

Navigate to Local > Disk > From Image > Enter
Select the CD drive\image file as the Source > Enter
Select the HD as the destination > Enter
When prompted to continue Restore > Enter

If that fails and you have another XP machine handy:
Remove the HD from the case and connect it in another machine as the Master.
Remove other hd's to prevent any wrong disk restore.
Boot with the CD1 restore disk in the CD\DVD drive.
Select option 1 to restore.
Insert disk2 when prompted and disk3 3 if applicable.
When the restore is finished, DO NOT REBOOT when prompted, SHUT DOWN.
Remove the restored disk and reconnect the original disk/s.
Reinstall the restored disk in the Emachine and boot.
