Hi igno,
You can use the XP or W2K CD to reset the partitions and Format. FYI. You must read
and honor the EULA agreement. (or they will catch you when you Update).
First boot to the BIOS (start from power off and tap the "delete" key) and change
the first boot device to CD. It normally uses Floppy first. After you get through
with the install change the BIOS back to its original first boot device.
Be sure to know how you want setup the partitions. A basic partition is used when
you do not want any partitions. Given the size of the HDD, you may want to set a
separate for data, and if you have a very large HDD, you can actually use a separate
partition to save all of the files that will be erased after format (like .wab,
desktop theme .thm, and others)
After getting all files you want and need, place the CD in its tray and reboot, and
start tapping the spacebar(any key actually) to start from the CD, choose setup and
it will carry you through pretty straight forward.
Here is an article link for installing W2000. It basically is the same. you can
print it and use as a guide.

It's not that tough. Good Luck on your first time.

My friends computer has become a mess now. As per her there are frequent
Errors /shutdowns and wants to format the hard drive now. What should my
friend do to format so that she could follow of her own and install
winxp home instead.
