You don't need to format a drive to install XP, as you will have the
option to format after the CD has booted. Have you tried the hard drive
in another PC to confirm it's OK?

John.

More details would help us understand your problem. You get an error booting
from the windows XP cd or actually installing win xp after it already booted
from the cd? You say load... do you mean install windows onto the drive. If
you boot your pc from Window xp cd you should get the option of deleting all
partitions before installing windows. I recommend doing this to get rid of
any crap that may be lurking on the drive and create 2 partitions so you can
save files to the 2nd for future formatting of drive c and to create a backup
image onto drive d.

i am trying to format the hard drive and to installal micorsoft xp
proffession i put the cd in and boot it with the cd before it gives me the
option to format i get a blue screen with the following error

stop c0000221 unknown hard error \systemroot\system32\ntdll.dll

Ok, with that I now repeat what john says. Try it in another computer to
confirm its ok and do a format there. Ram can also be a nasty problem for
some computers. Are you mixing 2 types of memory. If so try doing it with
just one stick installed. If all you have is one stick pop it out and put it
back. If you have access to another stick, try it. Do this with the power
supply turned off or power cable disconnected.

Is this the same hard drive about which you posted before? Buy a new
hard drive - this one is dying. If this is a new hard drive but the same
computer with which you were having similar problems, you have not
addressed the hardware failure on it. You will need to get your hardware
problems fixed before you can install an operating system on this machine.

Yes, the better way is to not format the target drive.

Let the installation process do what it needs to do to prepare its own nest.

After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS
installation, simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part
of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of
boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Then the backed up data can be restored and applications re-installed.
