How do I format cells so that when I click and drag a cell with the
figure "1".. then consecutive numbers appear (as oppose to lots of 1s)

press the 'Control' button when you drag and it will increment it.

Hold the Ctrl key as you drag the fill handle.

It works on the new spread shhet I created but not on my colleagues
pre-established sheet... could this be a formatting thing?

Any chance that 1 in the existing workbook was formatted as Text?

Try formatting it as general, retype the 1 and then ctrl-drag.

(I like to rightclick and drag--I get a bunch of options that I can choose
from--including "fill series". And it means I don't have to remember another
shortcut--but I'm old.)
