You need to log on to XP using the built-in System Administrator account to
delete or change the password for that account. Revealing this account will
depend on which version of XP is installed.

For XP Pro, when you see the log on screen, press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice to
reveal the System Administrator account. Select this account and press
ENTER.

For XP Home, you will need to go to Safe Mode. Reboot the system and when
the computer first starts to initialize, stsrt pressing the F8 key rapidly
until you see the black screen menu. Select Safe Mode using the Arrow keys
and Press ENTER. You will see the System Administrator account, press ENTER
to log on.

Once you are logged on, go to Control Panel/User Accounts, select the
account you are locked out of and select Remove my password.

Home or Pro? If Home, start the machine in Safe Mode and log in as
Administrator. If you didn't set a different password, then the default
password is blank so just press "Enter". Once logged in, you can change
your "regular" account's password with the Control Panel>User Accounts
applet. If Pro or you set an Administrator password, post back.

This is where the reserve, emergency account called Administrator comes
in. Boot, hitting F8 as BIOS info goes to black; take Safe Mode, There
will then be an icon for Administrator on the Welcome screen. (If not,
hit CTL-ALT-DEL twice and enter the explicit name
Administrator
and leave the password blank)

In that, Start - Run the line
control userpasswords2
where you can select any account name and Reset Password
