Forcing pic extension from .BMP

I use Outlook 2000. All my attachments come in as "untitled" and when I go to
save them, the only extension choice I have is .bmp. Even if it is an
animated pic. How do I force Outlook to give me an extension choice?

Jann,
This is a known problem if the temporary files folder becomes too full. And
the automatic setting to clear it do not work. You will need to clear it
manually.
1. Close Outlook.
2. Open IE> TOOLS> Internet Options> General tab> Empty Temporary Files,
Check box to include Offline Items.
3. Or Control Panel> Internet Options> General tab> Empty Temporary Files,
Check box to include Offline Items.

First, I delete ALL the temp files on my system twice a day. Especially the
IE temp files. This is not a problem with IE as I use Outlook as a
stand-alone email client and do not have it connected to IE in any way. My OS
is Win 2000 Pro, FYI.

The problem is: when I go to save an attached pic in Outlook, in the
drop-down menu at the bottom of the 'save' window, the ONLY option for an
extension is .bmp. This shouldn't have anything to do with any temp files. It
has always been this way. Perhaps Outlook Express is connected to IE somehow
and interferes?

Actually, he left out a second step.
Load IE.
Go to Tools - Internet Options - General - Settings - View Objects
Delete any objects that have a status of "Unknown" or "Damaged".

And OL does use some IE functionality, so yes, sorry, temp files can be
involved.

attached pic, I get the option to save or open. I click on save. The window
opens, I name the pic. Under that box there is a drop-down menu with only one
extension choice, .bmp. I need choices like .gif or .jpg. So, my question
becomes: How to I make the drop-down give me more choices? If I were using
Win98 SE I would just tweak the Registry and be done with it. IF I put
another extension after I name the pic, I get, for example: picture.jpg.bmp.
Changing the extension in my file manager does nothing.

In your folder settings, have you got "show known extensions" turned on?

I have just tried the process you described, and although the only drop down
is "All Files (*)", I can still do a "save as" .jpg by naming the file as
"name.jpg".

If you really need the file in a specific format, and the above does not work,
then you can always open it into paint and save into a different format. For
animated images, you will need to use a different program (one that is web
based such as frontend could help, or even better if you have photoshop)

*sob* I don't have that option in Folders. I bought ACDSee some time ago and
I like it. I also have Photoshop but don't want to install it on this system.
I can install it on the laptop, so I may do that is all else fails. I may run
a bunch of keywords through that PaperClip Guy. Thanks!

I went there and did everything it said, to no avail. So, I sent a .gif to
me to ISP Netscape.com, Gmail, hotmail, yahoo mail. From IE all four allowed
me to save it as a .gif. Resent it to my STAND ALONE Outlook client and the
ONLY option I have in there to save a graphic to is .BMP. No other. I looked
in the Registry and can find nothing in there to change.

I DO NOT get my mail in IE or OE. I get it in Outlook 2000. I am going to
try to reinstall it from my Office CD. Perhaps there is an option in there
somewhere I missed when I first installed it. Hmmmm I just had another idea.
Hang on.........nm. I remember once I had to change an option in WinWord for
Outlook. Not so for this.

I hate to sound rude, but, you seem to think we're all idiots and unable to
understand that you don't use IE to get your mail, but you use Outlook.

We understand that. And we are giving you steps that we've seen that fix
the problem. Outlook uses IE a lot. The fact that you're able to save
graphics in IE properly, but not in Outlook admittedly suprises me. But
then, I don't entirely rememer Outlook 2000. Outlook 2003 saves graphics
just fine in the format the graphic was sent in.

Out of curiousity, what happens if you right click on a graphic in IE and
try to save it?

When I right click in IE, the drop-down gives me two choices: whatever the
format is, ie .gif or .jpg AND All files. Outlook is the only place I have
trouble.

I was a die-hard Eudora and Netscape user for 14 years. When I built this
box I decided to go with IE and Outlook to make things a little easier.
Compatibility issues with those in XP Pro and 2000 Pro!

What I meant was usually when I troubleshoot and start from the harder end,
it is something on the simple end that is the solution!

Have you tried just naming the files you want to save it as in the "save
dialog"?

for example:

Click save as

When the dialog box comes up, leave the drop down box as "All files (*)", and
just type

Picture.jpg

that should save it.

Plus are you using Outlook express or Outlook 2000? just you seem to mention
both in your previous posts. (sorry to be picky, but it may be a factor)

I used to have the same problem with images in firefox, but it seems to have
been fixed with the updates (ages ago that is), so i sympathise with you how
annoying it is having to name every file and the extension type.


NB: sudden thought, have you tried just dragging the image from the email and
placing it into your desktop/ required folder?
