Forced Japanese!

For several months, I'd been unable to use IE 6. No matter what site
I tried to access, I'd just get something like "Invalid script error"
or something similar. Wasn't really a huge problem, as I could just
as easily use Mozilla Firebird.

But I finally had to do something about it, because whatever broke IE
also broke Windows Update, Norton Anti-Virus and a few other things.

After searching around, I was pointed to the sfc /scannow command. It
worked! IE now works, NAV works, TurboTax can look for updates, etc.

But there's a really weird catch: Windows Update will *only* take me
to the Japanese version. I can't manually override the URL or get to
the English version in any other way. Also, Google defaults to
Japanese. It's as though IE 6 or Windows itself thinks I've installed
the Japanese version, but I certainly haven't.

I've tried Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options, but
everything there points to U.S. English.

Any ideas?

I've partially answered my own question: There was a spurious "User
Defined" entry under "Languages" in "Internet Options". Removing it
now allows Windows Update to come up in English.

Unfortunately, Windows Update now produces nothing more useful than
"Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the
requested page" when I try to use it!

Responding to myself yet again: Please ignore the prior two posts.
I'm an idiot. :)
