Yes and no. I'll ask again because, while Kerry Brown gave me some useful
information, I'm still unclear as to what the difference between an saving
an image of your computer as opposed to backing up--which I infer to mean
saving--the whole thing.

But no, because I didn't see any response to my previous post. Assuming that
nobody replied to my original message because of some flaw in its content, I
tried to both tidy it up a bit and be more precise. Forgive me, though, for
I'm still learning how to use this news reader thing. The sheer volume of
posts has forced me to contrive a technique for ensuring I can readily view
my posts, which might have backfired in the case in question. I'm sorry.

There were 3 replies to your original question and as Ken says
you did not reply.

In Outlook Express use View, Current View, Replies to my
Messages. You can toggle it on and off.

Hope this helps.

If you stick to a thread you've started, then the responders will know what

critical if you expect to get something resolved that is not quickly fixed
in one or two lines.

There are "rules" about sticking to a thread once started. I for one am
willing to give the benefit of the doubt to posters who are just beginning
but many aren't. You will have to deal with that John. It is the name of the
game in this type of support venue.

What you might try is use your return email adreess as a criterion that when
found when d/l the message headers it makes that message watched. You will
find that in Outlook Express under View | Current View | Define Views...
Scout around in there you will figure it out. The other place to look is
Tools | Message Rules | News.. There you can have a rule for Watched
Messages. You will define that there. Scout around in there you will figure
it out.

Those two places can be used to find your previous posts easily and keep the
authoritarians at bay. Good lvuk.

John,
" ...the difference between saving an image of your computer..."

An "Image" is a non-functioning digital rendition of your computer "as is"
on the day you image it.[When entire drive is imaged] It has to be
"re-transcribed" onto a disk/drive to be functional. [Also, they're usually
compressed to 80% (or more) when in image form.]

"...as opposed to backing up--which I infer to mean saving--the whole thing."

Backing up usually means copying files/folders, even settings, that took
time to create.
Backing up "the whole thing" is called "cloning" if you copy to the same
partition on another drive. This drive could then be physically installed and
then run in place of the "failed' drive. [wouldn't do for your laptop]

Can't say I've ever copied two entire drives onto a single drive.

Imaging is faster, and the software allows you to restore single or multiple
files as well as the whole image. [I have Ghost 9.0]
:

I'm still unclear as to what the difference between an saving
