Windows XP Footnotes

Hello

I cut and pasted one document, heavily footnoted, into a blank doc. The transfer worked well, except that all the footnotes are now in grey type and a continuous line (as with Track Changes) runs down the left margin. New typing in the footnotes is black. How do I convert the grey to black? Using the template for colour of typeface does not work.
