Footnote text style

J

Jeff

I am working in Word 2002 on a large document that contains a great number
of footnotes. Sometimes I paste into a pre-existing footnote, text from
somewhere else. When I do so at the end of the footnote, the font retains
the larger font size of the document it is originating from (which I can
change) but that part of the footnote text is listed as style "normal".
When I try to change it to footnote text, I cannot do so because "footnote
text" does not appear among my options in the drop down list from my style
box, even though the footnote texts in the footnotes above and below are in
that style.

What am I doing wrong? How can I make "footnote text" appear among my style
selection list?

Thanks.

Isn't this annoying? Press Shift while clicking on the arrow to force Word
to display the complete style list. Alternatively, you can type in "Footnote
Text" and press Enter, but this can be dangerous since you'll be creating a
new style if you don't get the style name exactly correct.

Thank you, thank you. The shift trick works well. Is there a way to make
that the default when I click on the down arrow? (I might forget about it
the next time I need it in Word <grin>)

Thanks, Suzanne. I have been barraging the newslist with questions (I'm
sorry) and you always come through. I greatly appreciate it.

I don't know of any simple way to make this the default, but in Word 2002
and above you can make Word show *all* styles--or at least all the ones
you're interested in. At the bottom of the Styles and Formatting task pane,
select Custom, switch to "All styles" in the Format Settings dialog (in this
case, it really will show *all* styles, and you can see that the ones
previously omitted are not checked), pick the styles you want displayed, and
check the box for "Save settings to template." The Styles dialog will then
display these styles (or at least the ones that are in use).
