Foonote Reference Formating

I'm in the incoming editor of an academic journal and we are trying to implement changes in our format. We would like to have a footnote reference in superscript in the body text, and have the footnote reference in the footnote area in regular size with a period after it (e.g. 1., 2., etc...). When trying to edit the way the footnote number appears in the footnote area, the only options that Word (using Office XP btw...) gives me is to change the number format and nothing else. While I can select all the footnotes and easily remove the superscript, adding the period is more problematic. The only way I've found to this is to add them manually. This would be inneficient for our article prodcution as some authors use 500+ footnotes. Is there a way using styles, or formatting, to change the footnote reference format in the footnote area to include a period after the footnote number

Any help would be welcome

P.S. I have figured a work-around whereby I apply a style with a numbered list. Unfortunately, the footnote reference number still remains, so I'm backing to manually deleting them all...

See here for a macro that will take off some of the labor.

I want the numbers in my footnotes not to be superscripted, and I want the
numbers to be followed by a dot and a tab

If you aren't familiar with Macros, see here:

What do I do with macros sent to me by other newsgroup readers to help me
out?
I don't know how to install them and put them to use

A prince among women, in fact...and other people wrote the articles (re
changing footnote appearance and using macros) so the credit really goes to
them (Dave Rado and Graham Mayor). But thanks is always appreciated, I'm
glad my "see here"s helped you out.

The general site http://word.mvps.org is a treasure trove on using
Word--since you are editing academics, you may even want to direct some of
your authors to particular articles.

I've been looking everywhere for this info!

It's not quite what I want (I want to search through a document and ge
rid of the default space after the footnote reference), but I thin
this is enough to get me on the road.

Thanks Dayo.
