Slip Kid
I play music from an older machine (P-233 w/ 256 mg o' RAM) via a LAN
(all music is on a new machine).
Most players I've used are either slow, some break up or crash (and all
use all my
CPU resources to 100%, even though they don't seem to use much memory).
So far I've had the best success with MediaMonkey and it has a does a
great job of managing and tagging. It doesn't crash or break up but it's
slow (changes take forever to refresh). Winamp is ok, it doen't
crash or break up but is even slower.
Forget Win Media Player. It won't even acess files via the network
connection. XM
Play is great - - not on the network.
Well I settleled upon MediaMonkey months ago.
I needed to convert an amp file to .mp3 in my main machine and saw
(here) how Foobar2000 can do that. [Well, I must have done something
wrong as I couldn't get the mp3 plug-in to appear on the list - - I did
manage to compress the file from 800 mg to 500...]
Whew!
Anyway, I saw I had Foobar on the old box and after reading about how
stingy it is I gave it a shot on the old box. it runs great! It's
the fastest player, so far and while it uses all my resources I don't
have anything else going on anyway. (CPU usage only, memory is under 12
meg) Only the basic version worked....
So?! I notice I need a bit of Eq?...As soon as I add the DSP to Foobar?
- - Same old story. Slow (all actions take forever), & it breaks up.
Without any Eq, Foobar is the best by far.
The sound isn't bad, it just needs a bit of beefing up.
How can I do that (in Foobar) without making it unusable?

I hope that has slowed the Usenet e-mail harvest - - by a few days?
