Hey all.
This might seem very basic but I'm a real amateur. I've just built a site and my preferredfont is Papyrus - slightly unusual and not installed on everyones computer. Problem is that my site then appears with all the text in Times New Roman instead of Papyrus on computers that don't have it installed. How can I get around this problem, or am I going to have to use a more common font? Thanks
Jaimin

You will need to use a more common font.

You can also use a more common font for the body copy and then use Papyrus for major headings, but
created as a GIF image.

Thomas & Jaimin,

Excuse me for butting in but Thomas has partially answered the question I
was about to post -

I am aware of (& frustrated by!) the major limitations caused by font
availabilities and want to ask -

1. Is there a list somewhere of 'common' fonts that are available on most
computers?
2. Is it possible to embed in the HTML an alternative common font to use if
the preferred one is not available.
3. I do tables output by dBase which are based on using a fixed width font.
I have reluctantly settled on Courier New - is there any other 'common'
fixed width font, I am looking especially for a readable narrow/condensed
font.

Many thanks & Regards

1) Common fonts:
http://www.ycoln-resources.com/resources/misc/webfonts.htm

2) WEFT on the Microsoft Site. Been discussed over and over and over in
this newsgroup. Not reliable, and only in certain IE versions. And, only
if the visitor allows it. Security issue.

3) No.

You can embed a font using MS WEFT, however it is up to the user if they will allow it to be
downloaded, plus it is only supported in IE browsers.

See:
http://www.ycoln-resources.com/resources/misc/webfonts.htm

You can also use font tags or CSS to specify more than one font in the order of your preference.

Thomas,

Thanks for the prompt response - as mentioned in my reply to Tom I had a
brief & totally unsuccessful flirt with WEFT.

With regard to font tags listing alternative fonts - can FrontPage be told
to do that automatically as a default?

And thanks for the response on Searchable Database - I guess exactly what I
was expecting but nonetheless hoping for a miracle solution ;)

No, as FP would have no idea what fonts you would want to use or the order you want to use them.
However, if you use themes they are set up with alternative fonts via CSS.

I still use font tags, so I will usually specific the font as Verdana, then do a Search and Replace
for "Verdana" and replaces with say "Verdana, Arial, Helvetica"
