Fonts displaying incorrectly after system crash

Hi there,

My friend had a total system crash which necessitated having to reinstall
software on his system. Now he tells me that everything looks strange on
the screen. I suspect the text under icons, for example, is probably a
system font and not the default Windows XP font.

How do you go about ensuring that the correct fonts are used? He says
everything looks "stringy" in the text.

What is the best way to fix the problem? The crash that was experienced
meant that he lost all his personal files on the computer, i.e., mail,
documents, music, pictures. He has managed to get many of these back from
disks, but there are still problems.

Sorry I can't provide more info as I haven't seen the computer in question.

Would it be a simple step to re-install the fonts from the XP disk by going
to the Fonts folder and then installing the fonts from othe CD/DVD? Or is
there a more detailed process to follow. Either way any guidance and steps
much appreciated. The system is Win XP SP2.

Thank you!

Thanks for the reply on his, but the icons are not really the problem,
they're just an example of what isn't displaying.

I had my buddy check and has over 300 fonts installed; however, he seems to
be missing some system fonts. I found a list here,
http://www.kayskreations.net/fonts/fonttb.html
Which at least give a guideline as to what should be present.

I see two options. First, can the fonts be installed direct from the XP
install disk? If so, where are the fonts located on same disk?

Second. Is it best to just re-install windows over the current copy and
hope that the fonts rectify themselves upon re-installation?

Maybe I didn't explain properly in my first post that the font display is
present in any application that he opens, but noticeable on the desktop.
E-mails are a problem, he says they look weird.

Any other suggestions please? Thanks!

Lynn
