Fonts Blurry

I have a new computer with Windows XP Multi Media...the fonts are not
appearing clearly (a bit blurry). For example if I open Control Panel & read
the fonts beneath the icons, they are blurred (as if a typing ribbon was
running out). I have changed the setting in Display, Appearance, Effects
from Clear Type to Standard. This "helps" but does not make it appear as it
should. Any help would be appreciated.

your computer probably has an LCD monitor.
You have to find what its resolution is and set your display to that
because LCD screens work well only on one resolution.
Read the Monitor manual.
You should then turn on cleartype.

If the letters are too small then you will have to adjust the font size
but not the screen resolution.

I think it's your screen resolution that needs adjusting. Display > Settings
Screen Resolution. If that doesn't work then you probably don't have the
correct graphics adapter driver.

What screen resolution would you suggest? I have 17" Dell Analog Flat Panel?
It came with a driver on CD, but I was told to just plug it in & not install
software. And, if I do install the software (driver), how do I do that?

There's only so many resolutions to choose from; experiment and see which
works best.

If you just bought this computer, then you're likely entitled to
first-3-months worth of customer support relating to software issues. They
should be able to work with you over the phone to see what's wrong, e.g.
verifying if you have the right driver by uninstalling the one that's
currently installed and using your disc to install another one ... Control
Panel > System Properties > Device Manager: Is there a question mark beside
the "Display adapters" item? Hope this helps,

I changed the resolution to the from 1024x768 (it came set this way) to
1280x1024 recommended by Dell, but it looked "so small" & changing the font
size did not clear up this problem. I have no other problem with the
monitor. The fonts just look like a typewriter ribbon that is running out of
ink (visible but just not clear).

Unfortunately, still no solution.

I have worked with Dell for 4 hrs on chat/telephone & still no solution
(we've changed everything). They are sending a Driver CD (I thought I had
it, but didn't), but they say what's on the computer is correct. Beats me!!!

Elsie... after you change the resolution the fonts will be small but you can
change that from

control panel>display>appearence and select LARGE or EXTRA LARGE from the
drop down box

ALSO

you can try going to the SETTINGS tab press the ADVANCED button and in the
DPI setting
drop down box selece LARGE SIZE or make your own custom value!

this is the CORRECT way to use an LCD monitor...with WINXP

On my brandnew HP notebook with native res of 1050X1680, display of first
created User with full admin rights is crip, clear & sharp. When I created
2nd user with full admin rights, display of fonts was also perfect but after
first shutdown/restart and log in as 2nd user, fonts had become fuzzy and
fatter, and font type slightly differs from 1st user. I created Guest account
and fonts display remains perfect everytime. I then deleted 2nd user and
started all over agin with new 2nd user name & new password. Same story -
display perfect until laptop shutdown and restarted. I did this a few more
times to try to get same display quality as original user but no luck sofar.
I will try your suggested cleartype tuner tip but please can you explain why
XP does not by default use same settings for any new user created? It does
for the Guest account only! I sent HP screenshots to show the problem but no
answers from them to date!
Thanks & greetings from Angola - Onno

Sorry, I don't know what could be happening to the settings.
