Font Installation Problem in WinXP Home

A

AA Smith

I'm trying to help a friend in Houston install a Courier font on his
computer. I'm in the Dallas-Fort Worth MetromessHe has an HP DeskJet 940c
printer. I thought the Courier font came standard (pre-installed) on HP
printers, but apparently not. The standard Courier (not Courier New) font
does not appear in his Microsoft Word list of fonts on the pull-down list.

I e-mailed him a Courier font from this computer which we tried to install,
but the Install Font dialogue wouldn't let him install it. He got a message
telling him that he has to remove the font before reinstalling it. He
Checked in Windows\Fonts, but found no standard Courier font. He did find 4
Courier New items, though I don't know why 4 are listed.

How can we get the standard Courier font to install and be available to him
in Word?

Sounds like possibly your friend has turned on the option to only show
truetype fonts on his computer. Have him open Fonts in the Control
Panel. In the Fonts folder have him select Tools, Folder Options and go
to the True Type Fonts tab. There he will find the setting to "Show
only TrueType fonts in the programs on my computer." Make sure that
isn't checked. If he has to remove the check, he will need to reboot
before the change is picked up.

Hi, Tom!

My friend checked that tab on the Folder Options tab, but found that the box
was unchecked.

What else might be preventing the Courier font to be available to him in
Word?

As has been discussed here (or in another Word NG) recently, the Courier
font that is resident in HP computers is available only if you use the
PostScript driver (and will probably be listed as a printer font). The four
Courier New listings represent bold, italic, and bold italic variants in
addition to the regular font. These variants are not available for Courier
PS.

Courier (Coure.fon) is a bitmap font that is only intended for screen
display. It (along with MS Sans Serif, FixedSys, and System) will not appear
in Word versions above 97.

Install font per below instructions. The font he needs is COURE.FON
Which is the Courier 10, 12, 15 (VGA res). Once downloaded go to:
Start>Control Panel>Fonts>File>Install new font and navigate to where
it was downloaded. There should be 4 Courier New fonts listed which are
TTF, Bold, Bold Italic and TTF Italic. If it will not install, either
drag&drop or
copy&paste the font file to the C:\Windows\Font directory.

Thanks, Byte!

We sincerely appreciate your feedback. I have passed it along to my friend
in Houston. Have a great day!

As Suzanne says in her latest post, HP supply different fonts with Desk
Jets than their LaserJets.

They do not supply Courier with Desk Jets.

If the issue is the darkness of the print, it might be worth trying Dark
Courier. HP supply this as a TrueType font and is usable by all printers.
Download it from their web site and install in the usual way. I don't
think Courier prints any darker than Courier New given the same weight.

If you still want to try the PostScript Courier font family, either
purchase it from Linotype or other good source or download an older
Acrobat version, install it, copy the Courier font files to a temporary
directory and install them from there, Then Delete the old Acrobat reader.

Let us know.

Coure.fon is one of a group of courx.fon files and similar provided for
use as screen fonts for some programs. All older programs, I recall. There
are ways to force its use as a screen font but Word versions after 97 will
_not_ print with them. Courier New will be substituted at print time.

The four Courier New listings represent bold, italic, and bold italic
variants in addition to the regular font. These variants are not available
for Courier PS.

Yes, they are.

Hmm. I thought someone had said here recently that they weren't.

Don't know what happened to this thread, but I posted on a similar one with
the exact same issue. It seems a lot of people want Courier font on their
Word 2003 in addition to Courier New. Courier New prints very faintly
(almost anemic-looking) and the standard format for screenwriting is Courier
12pt. That's why I need it.

Unfortunately, I am computer clueless and cannot follow all your helpful
suggestions, Tom. I have vestiges of 3 versions of Adobe Acrobat (5.0, 6.0,
7.0) on my XP computer, and I located some Courier files, but they were "Read
Only." Maybe, I was looking in the wrong place. I tried to "COPY THE COURIER
FONT FILES TO A TEMPORARY DIRECTORY" as you said but am clueless how to
"INSTALL THEM FROM THERE."

I would happily be a guinea pig for anyone with the saintly patience to walk
me through this and the curiousity, etc. Be happy to call you on the phone
if it isn't too much of an imposition. I find all this typing out of the
symptomolgy of the problem to be exhausting. Especially, when I'm ignorant
of computer terminology, etc. But, as I said, I'm desperate to obtain this
font.

I know I have Adobe 5.0 on a CD that came w/ my scanner, so I could easily
re-install it, if necessary. Otherwise, I've got the standard Windows XP.
One of my computers has Word 2003 (the one I do my writing on) and the other
one has Word 2002 (ver. 10.4...). So, I think it could be very
straightforward will the aid of someone in the know.

Thanks to anyone and everyone for reading this.

I've actually made a lot of progress since my previous post by following your
instructions vis-a-vis installing Courier font from Adobe Acrobat.

I was able to install the new fonts, and they look great. So much better
than Courier New. I download Dark Courier, as well. But, the Adobe Courier
std. is certainly dark enough for screenwriting format purposes. It's
exactly what I was looking for.

Extremely helpful posts, Tom. Thanks for them.

If you had purchased Final Draft or Screenwriter (my version is 2000),
screenwriting software, their installations install the
horrendously-ugly
"Hollywood-acceptable" Courier font...a remnant of screenwriting in
the 30's and 40's.

I considered buying FD or Movie Magic, but I've been writing in MS Word for
so long that I'm sure it would cramp my process --- at least for a few
months. My process involves having a lot of revisions mixed into the current
draft and I don't know how that would translate. It's hard to describe.

When I finish my draft, I might import it into FD or MM for standardization
purposes. The debate between FD and MM is a whole 'nother can of worms. I've
read that Final Draft 7.0 is a disaster and Movie Magic hasn't come up with
an update in years. I might wait for the next versions.

I never fully appreciated how different "Courier New" and "Courier" were,
until now. As "ugly" as Courier may be, it looks a helluva lot better and
more professional in a script than Courier New.

Uncle Joe

Having invented the Word screenwriting template back
in 1994, I can appreciate writing screenplays in Word,
Movie Magic 2000, and Final Draft 6. The debates
between Movie Magic and Final Draft are much like
the debates between Ford and Chevrolet owners: it
all depends on one's point of view. There's pros and
cons for each viewpoint.

I started using Movie Magic and then tried Final Draft.
I like the latter better. That's just my preference. They
both do a terrific job in aiding one in physically generating
a screenplay. I no longer have any use for Word as a
screenwriting tool...especially if I need to transmit my
screenplays by digital means to interested parties.
Hollywood is utterly entrenched insofar as formats
are concerned. Word files would not be acceptable.

Insofar as fonts are concerned, we're like Ford and
Chevrolet owners. I find Courier ugly and difficult to
read. New Courier is the accepted font in Hollywood
these days. But to each his/her own. Good luck!

Sorry to say that somehow I missed the later posts on this thread.
Hopefully, better late than never.

If anyone is trying to install Courier as found in Acrobat reader, please
be advised that the success of the venture depends on getting an older
version of Reader. Recent versions use the PostScript version if Courier
New rather than Courier. Check here:
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=acrobat
Try v 3.

Harold;
Glad it finally worked for you. Glad I could help.

Thanks for the reply and, again, the very helpful posts.

As I mentioned, I had folders for 3 different Adobe readers on my computer
(5,6, & 7). I found a Courier font only in the v.6 folder -- nothing in the
v.5 or v.7. You've recommended going back to v.3, but I think I found it in
v.6. I'm assuming that you were just generally pointing in the right
direction of an older version, and it's not impossible that I found it in v.6?

So far, so good. I'm still tinkering around with it, seeing how the new font
affects the old formatting, etc.
