Folders will not open - Font colour changed

R

Ricky

Two strange things have happened on my PC in the last few weeks:

Firstly, in Windows Explorer, a large number of my folder names have changed
the font colour to blue (they were all in black). This is in the left hand
pane and right hand pane, but not all names have changed. Have tried
various remedies in Control Panel - Display, but nothing seems to work. Can
anybody help on this ??

Secondly, after downloading a file - the final download window gives the
options :
Open File ---- Open Folder ---- Exit/Finish. If I choose Open Folder - I
get a window asking me what program I want to use to open this folder with ??
Also find the same problem if I use Search to find a file/folder and then
try to click on a found folder in the right hand pane of the Search window.
Can anybody help on this too??

Seems like something has corrupted recently but don't understand what or why.

I am using Windows XP - Home Edition SP2 and all updates are bang up to date.
I also have Norton Systemworks + Anti-virus and I also use Uniblue Registry
Booster which is a Registry problem checker and repair utility.

I would do a couple of things:
- Toss out your registry booster. Most registry cleaners are a waste of
time (at best) or they actually damage your machine. They report large
numbers of "problems" that they "fixed" but the effect of these fixes is
nil. Many people call then "Snake oil remedies".
- Use System Restore to return your machine to a point before the problem
started.

I second the motion that you should dump the Uniblue Registry Booster.

Blue type is commonly used in Windows Explorer to indicate compressed
files.
How To Use File Compression in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307987

File compression is not the same as compressing a drive.

Often downloaded files are zipped. Right click and look for an extract
option. Read and print off any installation notes on the web site before
downloading.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks - have now checked and found that the file names in blue type
are indeed files that are NTFS compressed files -- that answers that query !!

I have checked out your info on Registry Boosters/cleaners and will bear
this mind.

I repeat my 2nd query again

I understand about zipped files - I already have Winzip to open such files.
But you will see I am not talking about opening the file --- but opening the
FOLDER, that I have downloaded the file into. Also see continuation about the
Search Window.

What happens if you right click on the file and select Properties? Does
it open?

What is the name of the folder and what does it contain?

Can the Administrator open the file in Safe Mode?

Is this a standalone or networked computer?

Try the Drive, Folder, and Directory fixes here:
