Folders, programs, files vanished

I rebooted my pc to find that all files and folders in my documents have
vanished aswell as all programs, that appear to be not installed, so when i
click to open a program it goes straight to installation. The wierd things is
that my disk space is still being used as if everthing was ok. My files are
not hidden as i've already tried this in the folder options. The obvious
cause would be a virus, but what kind of virus, and is it possible to
retrieve all my folders and files back???

You might be sailing under a different profile folder name.
What folders can you see in "c:\Documents and Settings"?
