Folders open

If I check the option to have the folders with unread mail open, ALL folders
are opened when I start Windows Mail. If it is unchecked, none of the
folders are opened. It seems to me that with Outlook Express the open
option ONLY opened the folders with unread mail. Is this possible in
Windows Mail?

There is no such option. Only one folder can be open at a time.

If you mean the option to automatically display folders with unread
messages, it can't display one top level folder without displaying them all.
It can't display one subfolder of the Inbox without displaying all
subfolders of the Inbox.
 
I guess display is what I meant. In Outlook Express I could display all
folders with unread messages - and only those folder. With Windows Mail it
either displays all folders or none of the sub folders. This is regardless
of an unread emails in them. I would like to be able to automatically
display ONLY those folders with unread emails upon opening the Windows Mail
program. It seems to me that that is what it is saying with the option
"Automatically display folders with unread messages" which is under
Tools/options/general.

But it is not what is happening.

When I wrote the reply at the top I was in a hurry about to leave for work
and had not totally grasped all Frank said in his reply to me.

What I put in that reply still stands however in clarification let me
explain that I am talking about folders with some sub-folders having unread
messages and some folder with all of the sub-folder having no unread
messages. What I get now is all sub-folders will be displayed even if none
of the sub-folders have any unread messages. With Outlook Express, only the
folders with at least one sub-folder having an unread message would be
displayed.

Here is a simple sample. The capitol letters are folders and the lowercase
are sub-folders.

This is what I get now if I check the "Automatically display folders with
unread messages" box:

A all mail read
b all mail read
c all mail read

D all mail read
e all mail read
f some mail unread

If I don't check the box I get:

A all mail read

D all mail read

This is what I want to get:

A all mail read

D all mail read
e all mail read
f some mail unread

Hope that makes it clearer.

This is precisely my issue as well - "show unread" shows *all*
subfolders, including those without unread messages. This is not how
it worked in Outlook Express. Either this is a bug, or a valuable
feature has been lost. It is a serious enough "little" flaw that I'm
regretting upgrading to Vista!

Did you my any chance find a solution to this elsewhere? No one here seems
able to help us.

Every time I open Windows mail all folders' display are open. I wish to be
OPEN to INBOX. How can I do this?

Doesn't work. I've tried it with both.
What's more frustrating is this is happening in a different user account on
the same 'puter. On the other user account, it works fine (opens on INBOX).
 
Sometimes Windows Mail will exhibit strange behavior, which can be
caused by running a non-compatible antivirus. Which antivirus are you
running?
