Folders don't keep their view attributes

I am having an ever-increasingly-annoying problem with
explorer. All I want in life is for every folder on my
machine to show list view with regular attributes.
However, my computer keeps changing them on me. Some
folders it decides to view as music track folders, and I
can't click on view as modified to see what my most recent
documents are, because it only allows me to view by album,
track, artist, etc.

Some folders decide to be viewed as thumbnails. I keep
doing the folder options/view/view all folders like
current folder, but it never sticks. It's getting to the
point where I want to throw this thing out the nearest
window. Someone please tell me how this can be fixed!
Thank you.

Check out "F" at Kelly's link below, and look at the "folders" area.

For most XP answers and tweaks...

.

Is there a way to shut off the feature that detects what's
in a folder and changes the folder attributes? I.e., It
sees mp3s and changes the folder attributes to Music.

The folder in question here is a mapped drive, and wiil
not allow me to "Customize this folder."

Windows remembers 400 folder settings. When that number is reached some
settings aren't retained any longer. You can change this to 8000 by adding
this edit to the registry.

Run this edit, then reset your preferred folder options:

Increase Folder View Options Limit: (Line 2)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

I'm having a problem with this. I have previously used the trick described
on your page, ie deleting

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags

This worked for several years. Now, for some reason these 2 keys
automatically get regenerated, and the folder settings don't stick anymore.
Any help appreciated!

It takes more than deleting the keys, Vic and yes, they will always be
recreated but from scratch. Run the edit. It works. Good luck and keep me
posted.

Thanks for replying, Kelly.
I tried running the edit - it now remembers the size of folders, but it
insists on showing the folders list, as if I had clicked View->Explorer
Bar->Folders. (Maybe I should make it clear - I'm talking about desktop
folders here. I like an an icon view, with no folder list). If I close and
reopen any desktop folder, the folder list reappears.

If you have any more ideas, I'd be most grateful!
Cheers,
Vic

Hi Vic,

The Desktop is a folder as well. Go to Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder
Options/File Types. Click on Folder (fourth down), click Advanced and set
"open" as default. Ok your way out.
