Folder 'Status'

For whatever reason, I have several folders that Windows XP shows to be just
an ordinary folder with no extention. I cannot access the folderat ll. I was
advised to simply rename it and the system would redefine it back to a folder
but that did not work. Is there anything I can do to get it back to a normal
folder?

What sort of files? Do they have names? Where are they located?

Some Windows files do not have extensions. HOSTS & ntldr for example.

Do you have file extensions hidden?

Start | Run | Type: control folders | View tab |
Clear the Hide file extensions for known file types check box |
Apply | OK

File extensions are not hidden. The file type is simply a generic description
as 'File'. It is as if Windows XP does not have any idea what the object is
so I get a default description.
