Folder sharing hard drive crash

I was trying share a folder on my home network. I created a folder,
right-clicked and enabled sharing, and couldn't get it to work. So I rebooted
and the hard drive seems to have failed. I get "non-system" error at restart
and the drive drive makes a clunking noise. I bought a new drive and rebuilt
my system. Questions. Is the crash related to the sharing or coincidental?
What happened? How can I fix my old drive?

If I attach the old drive as a second drive, it does not mount.

Thanks
