Folder "shared documents" on C:\, folder to be shared on D:\

H

HJStern

As far as I understand the concept, I need to drag the folder that should be
shared into the "shared documents" folder. Since the folder that should be
shared is on disk D:\ and not on C:\ (operating system is on C:\, all data is
on D:\), dragging the folder into the shared documents results in copying all
files.

I do not want the files to be copied, since I do not want duplicate files
and since C: does not have enough disk space anyway.

If I use in the folder "shared documents" a link to the respective folder on
D:\ it is not shared anymore (i.e. not all users can write into files which
other people created).

Nevertheless, I would like to share a folder located on disk D:\ with all
users being able to have full access to the respective folder.

Can anybody help me?

Thank you for your support

What happens if you right-click on the folder on the D-drive and
select "Sharing and Security", then Sharing Tab, and click the "Share
this folder..." box (Give it a share name) and "Allow network users
to change my files" ?

Hi John,

Thank you for your help.

If I right-click on the respective folder and select "Sharing and Security"
the properties windows of the file opens on the sharing-tab. In the German
version of WinXP I have two major entries, one called "Lokal sharing and
security", the other "Network-sharing and security" (both translated from
German into English, I hope you can figure out what I am meaning).

The first has only one click-box called "do not share" the other has two
click-boxes, the first called "Share this folder in the network" the other
one "Allow network users to change my files" (again, both translated from
German into English).

You must be referring to those last two click-boxes. These are grey and
cannot be activated, since I am not on a network.

Thank you so far,
Holger

OK. So you have XP Home and need to share a folder on the D: drive
among other Local Restricted users. (I am assuming Restricted User
because an Administrator user will have access).

From the document:
"How to configure file sharing in Windows XP"
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040>

This means that you need "Level 5" access to a folder on the D drive.
According to this document, the only way to do this is to enable your
networking and share this folder, even though you don't have a network.

Items in the "Shared Documents" folder have "Level 3" access and a
Restricted user would not have Write access.

John

Hi John,

Thank you for your help. Everything seems to work fine with your suggestion.
