Folder Security issue

Brajesh Kumar

Hi,

I had a problem where a user mapped to my Visual Source
Safe drive and deleted data files .
How can I set a folder in such a mode that the user has
read/write permission but it can't be deleted?

I tried the following, which denies the delete permission
to all the users, but I am still able to delete the
folder:-

1. Start Windows Explorer
2. RightClick the Folder where the files are
3. Choose Properties
4. Choose Security
5. Choose the Group of users (ie. Domain Users) to set
this permission
6. Remove permission from Full Control
7. Choose Modify
8. Remove the mark from "Allow inheritable permissions
from parent to propagate to this object"
9. Choose Copy
10. Choose Advanced button
11. Choose the Group of users (ie. Domain Users) to set
this
12. Choose View/Edit-button
Remove the mark for allow from Delete
13. Choose Deny Delete
14. OK ...

Thanks,

Brajesh

There are two delete entries in advanced permissions, be sure to uncheck both, but I
would just give them read/list/execute/write permissions to start with and be done
with it. Write permissions does not give a user the ability to delete a file. Make
sure that they are not members of a group [such as everyone] that has full/modify
permissions. Another thing to check is that the everyone group has no more than
read/list/execute/write permissions on the drive/root folder. --- Steve

I have never tried the way you have, but I give users read/list/execute/write
ntfs permissions and the everyone or users group in the drive/root folder has
the same or less, then they can not delete files. You may try to logoff/logon to
test settings and make sure you are logged on as an account that is only in the
group you want to restrict. --- Steve
