I have a very frustrating problem. I want the My Computer
icon to open with the folder window pre-selected and
viewable. Instead I have to select folders each time I I
have opened the My Computer boject. Not a bidg drama, but
after a while it is getting very frustrating that the
choice won't stay permanent. I have been into folder
options and opted for web for folder and active desktop
but the stupid thing won't stay after I close the window.
is there a registry change I need to do. I am on SP4 and
blood pressure pills.

I think I am misunderstanding the problem, but here is a solution to the
problem as I understand it... You will basically cut-n-paste a shortcut to
My Computer into the Startup folder.

Right-click 'My Computer' and select 'Create Shortcut' from the pop-up menu.
Right-click the newly created 'Shortcut to My Computer' and select Cut from
the pop-up menu.

Now select 'Taskbar & Start Menu' from the Start-Settings menu. Select the
Advanced tab and click the Advanced button. You should see a folder tree
open to 'Start Menu' under your user folder. Expand the 'Programs' tree and
select the 'Startup' folder. Right-click a blank area in the Startup folder
and select Paste from the pop-up menu.

Now logoff and back on to test this solution.

Edit the shortcut's "Target" to read
%systemroot%\explorer.exe /e,D:\
Where D:\ is the drive and or directory you wish to expand.

There does seem to be a bit of mis-understanding here,
sorry I didn't make myself too clear. The problem is
every time I open My Computer the view defaults to just
the list of drives in a single view. I then have to
select folders from the taskbar to change the view every
time to see the folder view on the left of the window.
When I close the window and re-open it, it defauls to a
single list of my drives and I then have to select Folders
from the menu again. I don't necessarily need these
expanded to a specific drive each time and would actually
frefer that they don't. I just want to open My Computer
from the icon and see the folder view on the left and
normal view on the right. Hope that's clearer.

Create a shortcut with a "Target" of
%systemroot%\explorer.exe /e,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

Actually a big portion of what I've learned is a result of reading these
news groups.

Or right-click My Computer and then click Explore. The shortcut method is
better though, especially if you put it on your Quick Launch bar.
