Yesterday I tried to unhide file extensions on a PC with XP but the "folder
option" is non existent.
After going to customise, and selecting it into toolbars, it remains
inactive with a tick on it.
When asking a question in Help, the shortcut to 'folder options' remians
inactive.

What can I do to enable it so as to show hidden file extensions.

You might try Kelly's XP tweaks. Here's one:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 225. Restore Folder Options/Internet Options - Disable

You also need to find out what (possible malware) caused you to lose
this feature. Run these:

Malwarebytes© Corporation
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/program/mbam-setup.exe

SuperAntispyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

Thanks, I have not had time to get back to that PC yet, but will keep this
response thread posted of developments as and when I can!
Much appreciated.

Hi & thanks......yes I did , it was the first option I tried but discovered
the functionality has been disabled entirely somehow.

I finally managed to get back and see this PC, but the folder option to
unhide file extensions is still non-existent. She has had an IT chap in as
well, who either repaired or re-installed Xp, but it has not changed this
functionality. As far as I can see, no malware has affected it and they have
pretty good security and checks running NOD / ESSET. Vince Thurs 16th July
