Cannot Rename My Files or Folders in My Documents

Until recently, no problems. Now I cannot rename any file or folder in My
Documents, My Pictures, My Music. No rename option appears in the drop down
when I right click, and cannot rename with a mouse click on file name or
using the F2 Key. Rename option does not appear in the file and folder tasks
menu. In the file drop down menu the rename feature is inactive. If I right
click on the document or folder properties, in the general tab the file,
folder name is protected/inactive.

I am able to rename files and folders that are on my Desktop and if I move
or copy files and folders from My Documents to the desktop, I can then
rename. I have run a virus scan--none. Also, if I log onto other users on
the desktop computer, the problem does not exist in their environment. I have
a Dell Dimension 4700, XP Professional SP2.

I have checked Microsoft KB for a solution to no avail. Any solutions would
be appreciated.

Exact same problem that just started tonight when creating a new folder in
MyDocs. Dell XPS 400, XP Media Center Edition, admin rights on user account.
Everything shows up under "recent" in Win Explorer and places like Media
Player library where it counts 2 copies of all my files. All files & folders
are marked Read-Only, and changing that attribute doesn't seem to take. I'm
not even sure if these are the actual files or just shortcuts to somewhere
else...

Dumb question, but where are "My Documents" buried now in the Docs &
Settings for my account? Used to be easy enough to dig through C: to my
account, but now I just go in circles. I'd prefer to use that & have ful
access to everything.

Now I can only find the "recent" files through the shortcut My Docs folder,
[C:\Documents and Settings\[Me]\Recent\My Documents\] which won't do me much
good if every thing is named "New Folder" in the future and I can't rename
files... Appreciate any help!!!

Thank you. Any particular reason that would have changed from the way it was
a few days ago? I've been adding, moving & renaming files all over since I
got the computer a few weeks ago

I think I'll be making more 'user-friendly' spots to keep my files if My
Documents has gotten as apparently quirky as it is now.

Joe Z, sorry to hijack your post. Hopefully the same fix...

Thanks again.
