Folder opens on the Desktop at StartUp

B

Bennos

When I turn on my PC a folder automatically opens on the Desktop.
This happens everything. Its not in the startup menu, for some
reason/probelm it just opens.

Does anyone know why this happens? And, how to stop it from doing it?

Thanks Ben

Hi,

What folder does it open to? There are a couple of known issues, and each
opens a specific folder.

The home PC opens up the graphics card driver folder, in the exact position
as when I had it open while installing a new card. Ever since then it opens
it in the same position every time i start up the PC.

The work laptop just started doing it two weeks ago. It opens up a folder
that holds contents waiting to be burnt (a folder showing the D drive
contents). The thing is that I've now burnt those files but it still opens
on startup and asks if i want to write these files to a CD.

Thanks in advance
Ben

Hi Ben,

Try this: Control Panel/Folder Options/View tab, uncheck the line "restore
previous folder windows at logon". Click apply/ok, do not reboot yet.

Start/run msconfig, on the general tab select the diagnostic mode. Click
apply/ok and reboot at prompted.

The folder should not show up now. Rerun msconfig, put the system back in
normal mode. Click apply/ok and reboot once more. Does this help?

For most users, this will resolve the issue. For some that still have
registry damage it will not. If this is the case, could you please export
and post the contents of these keys in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

To do this, start/run regedit, expand the branches to each key (do this one
at a time). Click on the key, then on file/export. Give it any name, then
save to the desktop. Once you have saved both keys, close the registry
editor. Right-click one of the saved files on the desktop, choose edit, it
should open in notepad. Click edit/select all/edit/copy. Open a response to
this post and click in the message text area. Hit ctrl+v to paste the
contents. Repeat for the other saved key, then send the post for
examination.

The Control Panel solution hasn't solved the issue. The 'restore previous

but unfortunately no cigar.

Here is the other instructions you left. I've taken screenshots of the

By the way, this one:

GDay Rick,

Thanks for the reply.

Disabling "ATIPTA"="C:\\Program Files\\ATI Technologies\\ATI Control
Panel\\atiptaxx.exe" and "ATIModeChange"="Ati2mdxx.exe" worked, it got rid
of the folder that opens automatically.

However, it is now changed to a 'Selective Startup' and MSConfig opens on
startup unless I chose the 'Normal Startup' option which then opens the
folder in question again.

What are these files for anyway and why are they causing the folder to open?
CanI delete these in regedit instead of disabling them in MSConfig for a
more permanent solution?

When it comes up with the selective startup message, don't return to
normal startup. Just check the box to not have it warn you again.

Hi,

As Rock has stated, just check the box if you want to get rid of the
message. Those two entries are for your ATI display tools, and the problem
is that one or the other is damaged. While they are not essential, and the
tools can always be loaded from the start menu, you may want to reinstall
the drivers to try and repair it.

it
opens
it in the same position every time i start up the PC.

The work laptop just started doing it two weeks ago. It opens up a
folder
that holds contents waiting to be burnt (a folder showing the D
drive
contents). The thing is that I've now burnt those files but it still
opens
on startup and asks if i want to write these files to a CD.

Thanks in advance
Ben

Hi,

What folder does it open to? There are a couple of known issues,
and
each
opens a specific folder.

When I turn on my PC a folder automatically opens on the Desktop.
This happens everything. Its not in the startup menu, for some
reason/probelm it just opens.

Does anyone know why this happens? And, how to stop it from doing
it?

Thanks Ben
