Folder freezes with avi

Hi, I have a problem when I open a folder containing .avi files, these
may have come from my digital camera or off the net,the size can be
anything from less then 1 Mb up to 350 Mb the folder opens and then
it freezes and I cannot open any files that are in there including
files which are't .avi, all the .avi's will play perfectly if i open
WMP first and then select the file, if I open a program like Nero I
can browse to the folder and open, rename, move the .avi without any
problem, anyone have any idea's why I can't just open the folder
without it freezing? any help most welcome.

its freezing because when you open it in windows explorer its attepting to
show you a thumbnail of the AVI files, thats why it works fine when you open
the file direct ..... my system done the exact same about 4 formats ago,
bugged the hell out of me for ages and it was only ONE avi file in the
folder of many that was causing it .... if i remeber correcly it might have
been from my camcorder too ?/??? might ahve been an Xvid though ......
anyway, its a codec problem, if you can just change the file view thing and
that will help but not fix the problem.

i honestly cant remember how, or even if, i ever managed to fix mine .....
got a feeling i just formated soon after that and it never reapeared /????
