Folder - duplicate files in list form ?

J

John Fitzsimons

Hi,

I know there are plenty of duplicate checkers around. I use a number
of them. What I want to do is to be able to list two directories side
by side and have ALL the files in both directories show. With those
that are duplicated marked as duplicates and those that aren't shown
too.

Most duplicate checkers do not show the files that aren't duplicates.
This side by side view is probably more like a file manager/explorer
type thing. I know in the distant past that one or two programs did
something like this but, times change, there may be more/better
programs available as well.

Any recommendations ?

Regards, John.

So you want a freeware version of Beyond Compare?

Me too, but haven't found it yet.

Hi John,

I came across this one, CompFold.

Compares two folders or files and allows you to keep two folders
synchronised. Also shows differences in Delphi DFM files as text.

This is ideally suited to those working on two or more different PCs or
if they work locally from server stored source.

No installation required. 518.4 KB

xplorer² lite
www.zabkat.com/

has a Sync Wizard (user must checkbox options in dialog to find and select identical files in each pane)
xplorer² lite also has a "flat" mode that i've read about in the pdf, but I have felt inadequately ambitiouos enough to setup an
experiment for this combo of dupe and flat features.

currently i use xplorer² lite sync in a little more tedious manner:
use the link panes view (chain icon) while navigating htrough folders. then in each folder, i use dupe options in Sync Wizard
(from Mark menu)

one caution: if you've deleted many foldres, you may descend to a common 'parent' folder and will discover that both panes
display the exact same folder. unfortunately this state is not visually prominent. but IIRC, the Sync Wizard command will mark
*foldres* not just files... or something looks different in the Sync Wizard ... and this will tip you off that both panes are the
same folder. also, hopefully you protect yourself a bit by using windows recycle bin while doing a dupe clean-up project!

Yes, quite a nice program. It has also been updated to 1.52 since
this post.

I found xplorer² lite to be rather a case of overkill, and
crippleware, for what I wanted and, for me, rather un intuitive.
CompFold seems good but rather boring in presentation.

In the end I am tending not to go with any of these recommendations.
Though I appreciate people making them. :)

I have ended up with WinMerge. It might interest you as well,
as you said you had a similar query. Address is ;

John,

It's good to hear back from you.

I am still evaluating Allway Sync, which seems to do the job, but is not
as user friendly as Beyond Compare. Unless I missed something it seems
like each file (one at a time) needs to be selected in order to sync the
ones you want synced and in the direction you want them to go.

I took a look at WinMerge, like you I am interested in a dual pane
arrangement, but from the screenshots it doesn't look like WinMerge has
that. How is the combined screen working out for syncing files?
