(I originally added a new post 11may05 but can't find it now
( )
I use Fn+Suspend to put my Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop to sleep but
SOMEtimes if I leave it unattended for a while (more than an hour or two) it
seems to go comatose - by which I mean I come back to find the screen blank
(dark), the fans going berserk, and the whole thing pretty unresponsive. A
short press on the on/off does nothing (whereas normally that re-awakens it);
ditto other keys eg Esc and Ctrl+Alt+Del. The only thing that seems to work
is a long on/off press which shuts it all down but then it loses the context
of everything I was working on and, generally, doesn't seem a good idea.
When it reboots, it seems to start from nothing ok (sometimes with
dumprep') ... but why is this happening ? And any idea how to fix it ?
btw, this happens often but not always (!) and seems to have started
happening about 17mar05 when (having left something running overnight) I
found "the blue screen" implicating nv4_disp.dll so from the Control Panel,
System (h/w tab), Device Mgr, Display Adaptors, NVIDIA (Driver tab), I used
the hardware update wizard which said it had installed software for NVIDIA
GeForce4 440 Go (Microsoft Corp) and needed to reboot so I now have Nvidia
v5.6.7.3 07/04/2004.
That *may* just be coincidental timing but it previously used to work fine
always i.e. I could "Suspend" it for as long as I liked, re-awaken it with a
short on/off and everything used to come back just as I'd left it.
I tried the Wizard again but Wizard says it couldn't find a better match
for the hardware.
Would it help if i rolled back to the previous driver ? (Actually, I'm
not even sure if I can!) Persumably though I'd get the blue screen again ?
so would be no better off ? Can anybody ... Help !? Thanks,
Gerry
