FMSO roles on DC in child domain?

M

Mark N.

I set up a DC as the first server in a child domain. Now I'm bringing
another server into that child domain and will promote it to a DC and want
rid of the first child domain DC. Is this situation similar to the first DC
in a domain where I have to move the FMSO roles? Or is a first DC in a
child domain different and I can simply demote it and be done with it?

Thanks,
Mark

You need to simply demote child domain and promote new one to domain
controller.
I am giving this statement based on below assumtion
You have root DC as well and you are not doing anything to it...

Yes, you are correct - I should've mentioned that - I have an empty root...

Thanks!

Mark,

Actually, Dinesh put it in reverse order. I am sure that Dinesh knows the
correct procedure.

You need to add the second Domain Controller, transfer all services to this
new DC from the old DC and then - and only then - should you demote the
original....

Uh oh... So, you're talking about the FMSO roles? Or do you mean services
such as DNS/DHCP/etc. that I may be running on that box?
I promoted a new DC and killed the old one already, based on that post.
What kind of mess did I create?

Thanks,
Mark

None,

I think that we discussed this in one of your other posts.

While I like to manually transfer the FSMO Roles ( since we are talking
about a child domain you will have only the three domain-wide roles of PDC
Emulator, RID Master and Infrastructure Master ) via either ntdsutil or the
ADUC MMC I can assure you that the dcpromo process will take care of this
for you assuming that there is an available Domain Controller in that
domain - which in your case was the most probably the situation.

All you need to do is to open up the ADUC MMC and take a look to make sure
that the DC that you have remaining has all three of those roles. You can
also use netdom query fsmo.....as I believe that I mentioned in our other
posts.

This was my first time trying dcpromo to demote a DC. I did have my other
one there and ready to go and it seemed to transfer roles while I watched it
do its thing. Honestly, I wasn't sure though...

It's been a long time since I had an opportunity to get into something so
complicated and I'm really enjoying myself! This is what being an admin is
all about! I tend to forget after the 1,000th time a user asks me about
their screensaver or paper jam ;-P

My network has been humming along without any major changes in nearly four
years. This upgrade's a real kick in the ol' gray matter....
