Floppy not formated , cannot access disk .. etc.... advise :)

Hello all.

I was just searching up on the issues on floppy disks and have realized
that some people still use them. Heck, even I use them for bios
updates and such (hope that gets easier with time, and it is already
really).

Here's what I wanted to say to those people still having problems with
accessing floppys...

1. I have no idea why it happens- nobody seems to know really. i have
seen casses where the problem was not any that is suggested... who
knows.

MY ADVISE (which many people are doing now, including myself)

**** Use pen drives - fine... but BETTER YET > use your email
account. heck, we get tons of room, the lovely people at google are
giving almost 3Gb! that's plenty of room to store those docs etc.
email them to yourself as an attachment. If you are a member of
Gmail/google, then you can simply upload word, excel, and other files
right up to thier system under "my docs" and edit them from any
internet connected terminal in the WORLD! (ok, I've only used
terminals in the US... but I bet it would work :) lol. It's amazing!
I would say, if you want it for yourself as well, throw it on a cdrw or
a pen drive but hey, once you get used to the online document thing,
I'm sure you will LOVE IT!

Please, I wold like a discussion on this- it would be fun.

What do you use for data?
have you tried or like the online documents?
It's it just awsome how internet is being weaved into our lives-
between my job and my home, I can do anything on any document without
carying a single thing. - (ok, that might be too long of a topic there
lol)

Thanks for reading!
(to anyone sticking with the floppys... good luck)

The floppy will be around at least as long as system builders and repair
shops have to do XP installs (likely longer), as it is required to load any
drivers necessary for an XP install.

And, those computers that do not have floppy drives? They're not being
shipped that way any more.

30 of our 50 pcs/laptops do not have floppy drives.

We have no problems installing drivers without a floppy.

Tom:
In those situations, i.e., no floppy drive, how are you handling installing
SATA HDD controller drivers where the F6 floppy disk routine would normally
have to be employed?

We've found that in virtually every case (although we have come upon a few
rare exceptions), using an USB external floppy drive doesn't work.

We generally resort to temporarily connecting a floppy drive and installing
the SATA controller driver that way.

Have you been able to use a slipstreamed CD to accomplish this? We've not
been successful in doing so. If so, could you outline the process you use?
(We're aware of a number of websites that list instructions to create such a
CD but it hasn't worked for us. But if you have a reliable source would
appreciate your passing it on).

Thanks.

You should be able to use a USB floppy drive.

I have slipstreamed dozens of different controllers in Windows XP and
Windows 2003.
For unattended network and CD/DVD install methods.

Shenan:
Thanks for the link. We too have routinely installed drivers/controllers via
a CD in one fashion or another, but up to now we've been singularly
unsuccessful in doing so reliably as a viable alternative to the F6 floppy
disk routine during a new installation of XP. We've used various methods
that we've come across but none up to now have proven reliable.

The information on the site you referred to is new to me, so we'll certainly
give it a try. Thanks again.

This fix always works when the floppy go into the land of ozz.

1 uninstall the floppy from the device manager.
2 Shut the pc off and unplug the ribbon cable to the floppy.
3 Boot to bios and set floppy to none save and exit to windows.

Shut pc back down.
Connect the cable back.
Boot to bios and turn floppy back on, save and exit back to windows.
Has worked on ever pc I have used it on.
