If you have it set correctly in the bios...it probably just died...
$15 or so for a new one

have you tried opening a different floppy?

These drives do wear out, a slight misalignment with the
read head can cause this error.

To check the floppy disk, try it in an other 3.5" drive.

I just bought one for $7.99 at Circuit City. The shipping was more than the
drive. ;-)

Those things are held by (at most) 4 screws and 2 cables. Now, how hard
could it be to replace the thing?

You do have to open the case.

It isn't possible to misconnect the cables.

Ken - Yes, I think so, but I can't reformat or format the disk as the drive
isn't working. Just to be sure it isn't the disks, i will try on another
computer tomorrow. Thanks

Thanks Jim - Some say to leave the computer on, other to turn it off- what's
your opinion?

There is no opinion here, the computer MUST be turned off. And
also unplug it from the wall.

If that's the issue, don't format the diskette, since that will cause the
loss of everything on it. The way to access what's on it is to format a
diskette on your Windows XP machine (if you need to replace the drive,
diskette drives are *very* inexpensive), bring that diskette and the one you
couldn't open to the computer of a friend running Windows 98, and copy from
the old diskette to the freshly formatted one. The copy will now be readable
on the XP machine.
