When I try to open a floppy disk in windows explorer ,I get a screen
asking to install a disk . It happens a number of different disks
..Sometimes it asks to format the disk ..Once in a while it will read
the disk but if I change disks it doesnt dump what was on the previous
disk.

I have tried 2 other drives and numerous ables .

Could it be the Mother Board ????

Any Ideas .

TIA

Are you using Windows XP????? If so, there is a known problem with
recognizing floppies that were formatted with a lesser OS. The key is
to full format your blank floppies with XP and then anything written to
them (even with another OS) can be read.

Usually this has to do with the BIOS, FDD Controllers and mode 3 FDD's/
non mode 3 FDD's.

OleDawg;

You might want to check in your bios for an option like "floppy drive seek
at boot" or some similar sounding wordage and enable it if disabled. That
alone just may raise your satisfaction level. Win Xp has a setting for
checking for floppy drives at boot as well but I can't recall where it is so
you're on your own for finding that.

You didn't mention the OS being used here or mainboard model type, so going
solely on psychic abilities many questions come to mind such as is he
overclocking the fsb on a board that doesn't lock the pci speed? Did this
flippy drive work before just fine a few days ago? Is the cable plugged in
nice and firm? Is the cable connected properly or is the cable reversed?
Etc, etc...

Were these floppy disks FULL formatted, or QUICK formatted? The
problem I described has to do with writing the FAT or boot sector of the
floppy, and a Quick format does not effect that. You might also try
formatting a disk on YOUR computer and see if the problem repeats itself
after having formatted the disk.

you can try uninstalling the drive, and letting xp re-install it when you
next power up.

to uninstall it:
hold down the a flag key on the keyboard, it's next to the ALT keys, and
then press and release the pause/break key, and then release the ALT key.
In the popup window that apperas:
click on hardware, then device manger, then floppy disk drives.
select the drive and right click on it, then click on uninstall.

If the problem continues, you could fool with the diagnostic stuff that's in
the same place.

Good Luck,

Avery
