Flexible outline presentation on CD?

F

Fatfreek

I want to make an outline presentation that a client can operate from a CD
or DVD.

I understand that with my 2003 PowerPoint I may be able to use "Package for
CD" to make this happen.

I'd like the presentation to be in an outline format where the client can
launch any of the outline items (slides) she wishes to view - and in any
sequence. That means, of course, that she can skip certain ones - but that's
okay with me. I want this to be like an operating manual where the user can
go directly to the pages she wishes.

If this is possible, what part of Help should I concentrate on? Or are there
some online tutorials that cover this?

For what it's worth, I had this presentation mostly working in version 97.
The conversion to 2003, however, brought so many problems that I thought it
best to start over. Perhaps I can salvage some of that earlier work.

For a problem example, the index page automatically plays an audio file on
opening the presentation. That's fine. However, after opening one of the
outline slides, playing it, then returning to the index page - that same
audio plays again. That's not fine.

Any suggestions?

I think you can make a DVD from your PowerPoint presentation.
Maybe Wondershare PPT2DVD is what you need.
It can burn PowerPoint presentations to DVD with DVD Menus.
With the DVD Menus you can create out line categories and view the
slides in list view or thumbnail view.
Here is the details http://www.ppt-to-dvd.com

I want to make an outline presentation that a client can operate from a CD
or DVD.

I understand that with my 2003 PowerPoint I may be able to use "Package
for
CD" to make this happen.

If you need to make a presentation that plays in a CD or DVD drive in a
computer, then yes, you can use Package for CD. If you mean you need the
file to play in a typical DVD player hooked to a TV, then no, you can't use
Package for CD. See Convert presentations to VHS or DVD video
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00156.htm for specifics.
For a problem example, the index page automatically plays an audio file on
opening the presentation. That's fine. However, after opening one of the
outline slides, playing it, then returning to the index page - that same
audio plays again. That's not fine.

How is the user returning to the index? If it's via a link, then maybe link
back to a 2nd slide, a copy of the index, that doesn't have music. Usually
when you return to an already-visited slide, you return to the end state, so
the music shouldn't play again. And usually when you click a link to a new
file, it opens the file on top of the existing file. So you should be able
to click a link in the index, have the new file open on top of the index,
look at whatever, and then click a button to "return to index" or "close" or
whatever. That button would actually close the presentation, which would
allow the index presentation to be visible again (after all, it was just
hiding there behind the presentation the whole time anyway.)

So it seems to me you must be doing something more complicated.

If you're linking to slides within the same file, then linking to a copy of
the index without music would be a simple solution.
For what it's worth, I had this presentation mostly working in version 97.
The conversion to 2003, however, brought so many problems that I thought
it
best to start over. Perhaps I can salvage some of that earlier work.

97 and 2003 are vastly different, especially with respect to animations. And
sound relies on animation settings to work. So if your issues are mostly
with sound, then, well, I guess that doesn't surprise me too much. You
shouldn't have to start completely over, though.
